In a wide valley known as The Merse the small border town of Duns was the capital of the Scottish Borders whilst the current capital, Berwick-upon-Tweed, was under English rule. With a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants, the town also boasts more unusual activities such as the Jim Clark Museum, open to the public and dedicated to the famous racing driver who lived in the area. Throughout the surrounding area are numerous castles and historic houses, including Floors Castle and Gardens, the largest inhabited house in Scotland, Norham Castle situated on the River Tweed, Mellerstain House and Paxton House with its magnificent Country Park.
